Anyone and Everyone
June 23, 2025
Art is one of the most generous forces in the world. It opens its arms to anyone who seeks it—anyone with a spark of curiosity, a hunger to express, a desire to feel deeply. You don’t need a formal education, a gallery of your own, or even an audience. All you need is the willingness to look, or to create. In that way, art truly is for anyone.
But not for everyone.
And that’s okay.
There’s a quiet truth that lives inside this distinction. While art is accessible to all, it may not always resonate with everyone. Not every sculpture will move you. Not every painting will make your heart race. Not every poem will peel back your layers. Sometimes, what’s hailed as genius may leave you feeling indifferent. That doesn’t mean the work lacks merit or that the artist has failed—it simply means it doesn’t speak your language. It doesn't stir your spirit. And in the world of art, that is not just expected—it’s sacred.
Because the beauty of art isn’t just in how it’s made, but in how it meets us. Whether you’re an artist pouring your soul onto canvas, or a collector drawn to certain colors, lines, or themes—art becomes a mirror. It reflects those quiet parts of ourselves we’ve tucked away: forgotten dreams, unspoken grief, buried joy, raw longing. In the act of creating or curating, we begin to unearth those hidden selves, giving them light and space to breathe.
That’s why the art you’re drawn to matters. It’s no accident when a certain piece makes you pause, or when a song makes you cry. It’s your inner self tapping on the glass, saying this is me. This is something I couldn’t quite put into words—but here it is, captured in pigment, rhythm, texture, form.
At the same time, learning to accept what doesn’t speak to you is part of the journey. You’re not meant to love everything. Some art will pass you by, and some will even challenge or confuse you. Let it. Let it be what it is, without needing to mold it into something else. Not every piece needs to find a place in your soul. You’re free to walk away. You’re free to say, “This isn’t for me,” and move on.
But when you do find the pieces that sing to you—truly sing to you—stay with them. Let them teach you something about yourself. Let them deepen your understanding of who you are and who you’re becoming. Whether you're crafting them with your own hands or simply giving them a place in your world, these are the works that matter. These are the ones that make art not just a medium, but a revelation.
So, yes—art is for anyone. Anyone willing to open themselves up to it.
But not for everyone.
And in that beautiful contradiction, we find space for authenticity, for growth, for discovery. We find the freedom to love what we love, to let go of what we don’t, and to allow art—this vast, expressive, imperfect language—to lead us home to ourselves.
The Christopher Mudgett archive collection is the only one in the world to present the artist’s up-to-date painted, sculpted, engraved and illustrated œuvre and a precise record—through sketches, studies, drafts, notebooks, photos, books, films and documents—of the creative process.
