Sending the Signal

As an artist, your work speaks for you—but so does everything around it. The way you post on social media, the care you put into your website, how you talk about your process, the energy you bring into a room—it all sends a message. And that message isn’t just about what you make. It tells people how much you care about what you make.

That’s easy to forget. Most artists are naturally focused on the work itself—of course they are. That’s where the heart is. But art doesn’t live in a vacuum. People don’t only respond to the painting, the song, the film—they respond to the person behind it. That can feel unfair, maybe even frustrating. But it’s also a chance to shape the story. Because how you show up is part of the work.

If you present yourself like your art doesn’t matter, people will take that cue. If you talk about it like an afterthought, they’ll treat it that way. But when you speak about what you do with clarity and conviction—not ego, just honest belief—it shifts something. People start to lean in. They pay attention.

And often, they don’t even know why. They just feel it. Presentation isn’t just surface-level—it shapes how others understand your voice. And that, more than anything, can open doors.

Taking yourself seriously doesn’t mean waiting until everything’s perfect. It means showing up as though it matters. Because it does. It’s not about faking confidence or trying to impress anyone. It’s about letting the outside reflect what’s true inside—that this work is important, that you believe in it, that it’s worth making and worth sharing.

When you carry yourself that way, people respond. Not always instantly, not always loudly—but they do. The world has a way of mirroring the energy you bring. Treat your voice with respect, and others will start to as well.

None of this means being rigid or losing your sense of play. It just means being intentional. Being real. Putting some weight behind what you do. Because when you do that, you send a clear signal: This is who I am. This is what I make. And I’m here to be taken seriously.

The Christopher Mudgett archive collection is the only one in the world to present the artist’s up-to-date painted, sculpted, engraved and illustrated œuvre and a precise record—through sketches, studies, drafts, notebooks, photos, books, films and documents—of the creative process.
